It has been a busy month and I'm surprised to find the month is over.
With travel and work taking up more than 100% of my time I find it almost
impossible to sit down and think coherantly about life, love and the pursuit
of happiness. OK hokey but true.
This month we are in Arizona and it is nice to enjoy a much slower pace and
truly connect in real life with family. To watch as everyone enjoys success
or just plain fun.
We celebrated my cousins achievement in getting his Registered Architect License
here in Arizona. He is so smart and has a wonderful family.
Next week we will be with media and entertainment companies watching and talking
about 3D Internet, security and Identity.......what it all means.
I'm thinking there is something in the choke points of the virtual environments:
Identity Management, Intellectual Property and Scalability. My next adventure as
I move from Directing the Emerging Business Unit to what lies ahead. Here is to
July 2008.

People
I continue to focus on the fact that we are clearly in our second decade of a "network enabled" society.
These past few days have been marked by several anniversaries, some of loss and others of joy but all around people who are or have been a part of my life. These relationships are such a crucial part of life. I've been able to share this loss and joy with my virtual family. It makes me wonder as we move the strategy for 3D Internet if we can quantify at this very early juncture the value of humanity as it relates to knowing each other, meeting and working together no matter where the "space". We are afterall meeting now in Cyberspace the next great space!
I remind my team regularly that knowing people-- no matter where you meet is important, who are they, what do they enjoy, about their family or friends, a sincere exchange. I'm honored to be introduced to family and friends and find this no matter where it takes place. I think this is one reason why people in the virtual worlds are creating psuedo relationships. For example, I'm not only a Kearney but a Witte. Rita and Josh write about this in their blog. It's fascinating because somehow I feel related to other Witte's. Identity does matter and although we now have multiple roles and facets to our identity I find that at some level it's all about connecting to and with People.

Envisioning the future
I'm asked at almost every speaking engagement or customer event
to share my perspective of the future as it relates to 3D Internet.
As my ideas begin I often think back to the beginning of the worldwide web and how important it was to simply link documents and information.
Today we see the same emphasis on linking people. I do believe fundamentally that is the most important part of my work. Whether I am coaching my team to collaborate or actively collaborating with others inside and outside the company, it's connecting and building meaningful solutions to the problems, whether they are social, government or business.
The lines between these bodies are not as clearly defined as they once were, but I'm certain there is something to the triad in the three key organizational groups. No doubt it gives an odd challenge and balance approach to human systems. I guess Benjamin Franklin got it right in this design!
Clearly, the vision of the sensory web is new but I can tell you many are intrigued by it. Last night I attended Villanova's Computing Summit. We had great discussions around motivating and recruiting students to go into computer science. It's clearly an ongoing need and I was glad to be able to share my experience and my outlook on "cool" things you can do at work. It's certainly a fun place to be working right now and it's really fun to think we are setting the stage for the next generation Internet.

Two Panels in Three Days
This week was busy with the NDU panel on Thursday and the v-business Expo today.
It was fun and exciting to see PEOPLE get the value of a sensory web and 3D Internet.
We humans are so adaptive! I can't imagine what life will be like when this is the norm.
A recap from the panels:
Thursday's panel was focused on People inside the 3D Internet. It was wonderful, with (given in the order they were seated) David Kralik from America's Solutions, Tammy Johns, Manpower and Rita King and Josh Fouts from Dancing Inc. with Nick Wilson, Clever Zebra holding us up on the mixed media virtual environment side. Each had something very valuable to contribute, considering their part in working with people to advance the future of work, diplomacy, staffing and policy. I can't say enough about the extremely well thought out responses and ideas the panel provided.
Saturday was more of a presentation. I truly enjoyed my Saturday mid day at Clever Zebra Island sharing with people from around the world, my perspective on 3D Internet. From the evolution of the web to the future of 3D Internet, I truly believe we have a great opportunity and I'm thankful as a futurist to be able to share my insight on the needs and challenges in this space. Nick Wilson, his team and sponsors have really done a nice job in holding real virtual expos and I expect others will quickly follow this lead.
Cheers to those who are stepping up: Paulette Robinson, Nick Wilson and the many folks giving unselfishly to speak out and LEAD this era. As I said on Thursday, if it were not for 3D Internet we (and the number continues to grow) would not be together-- Crossing the Loosely Coupled Divide of this Globally Integrated World.

NDU Federal Consortium
These are exciting times.
Tomorrow I'm heading a private panel at the NDU Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds or as we call it in IBM, 3D Internet. It's exciting because I think back to two years ago, having this really robust discussion with Irving Wladawsky-Berger around the future of the 3D Internet. I summarized my thoughts to him, based on my experience as a pilot and the history of the Internet, it was something like this-- It's 3D Internet Irving it will be be big for the government. It is big for governments! It seems governments stand to gain so much in the way of collaboration and "loose coupling" it's time we "connected the dots."
Tomorrow, I will write a post to summarize the panel and the discussion.

Either way it is an extraordinary group for tomorrow's panel. Tomorrow will be fun. It's all about people and each of the panelist GET THAT.........I look forward to writing about the panel and the consortium.

Just a beginning
OK.
After years of reading others blogs and commenting, I've decided to write one of my own.
It will likely be,as most things are in my life, a large experiment of participation-- vice specatator-- effort.
Along the way, in the past few years, I've grown to respect the words of Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Cory Ondrejka and my good friends Ian Hughes and Rita King. Whenever I'm reading their blogs I am compelled to write my own thoughts not always as comments but derivations of thought or even stream of conscious response.
Ultimately, what amazes me most about blogging is the connections. I find myself reading Rita's blog and catching up on Ian or reading Irving's blog and rolling to the next person I've wanted to catch up with but not had time to connect.
I do believe that blogging in this second decade of the network enabled society is very important and that staying connected at a deeper level has become as much art as science. Now we will see if anyone picks up on my blog and more important will I keep up with a blog.
